About the Process
Rae Cumbie’s artistic expressions result in mixed-fiber clothing and accessories that are both artful and wearable. With more than 30 years’ experience as a custom dressmaker, she brings an extensive knowledge of fine sewing, couture construction, flattering and comfortable fit, and the necessary balance between line and design to the coats, evening ensembles, scarves, and other wardrobe pieces she designs and assembles.
Her limited-edition coats and accessories use unique combinations of silks, cottons, rayons, laces, trims, buttons, beads, feathers, fur, loose fibers, and any other resources, new or vintage, she can acquire. Her one-of-a-kind custom garments are made with the size, shape, and spirit of the wearer in mind.
Custom clothing clients are encouraged to participate in the design process and can even contribute fabrics, photos, or bobbles of their own.
Students of her classes through Fit for Art Patterns are encouraged to design and create their own artful and well fitting garments.
The finest fabrics and beautiful techniques are always the baseline, whether the creation is a gown for a special occasion or a jacket for every day.
Inspiration is readily available from the artist’s varied collection of fabrics, buttons and trims,. Her work also reflects a passion for the designs and fabrics of Asia and for the lovely feminine details she finds in studying historic fashions.
Designing and creating comfortable and visually pleasing clothing, Rae offers distinctive and original garments for the women who choose to enhance their wardrobe with one of her creations.
